I am currently on a TAMWORTH ADVENTURE; the Australian country music capital!
Venturing into the wild where, statistically (and according to very good sources such as Bill Bryson and Louise Gibson), I was probably going to be bitten or stung by some poisonous animal, where I would die a quick yet painful death. Turning up in Tamworth, I made fun of the funny name of a place, only to be told casually that we couldn't go there because there was a murderous rapist on the loose. Playing along with the "all Australians are killer rapists anyway" way of thinking, I joined in on what I thought was good fun, but turned out to be real. After killing his family and living on the land for 7 years (eating raw wombat, according to some), he recently shot a cop and is now on the run again. It's pretty much just like Ned Kelly, minus the Irish accents.
It is so beautiful here. We're staying at Em's parents house on the hill, which has a huge pool overlooking the wilderness, a deck, beautiful open spaces and a serene feel. It's huge. Her dad is a doctor and country music singer (was recently nominated for a gospel award in the golden guitar, or something, pretty much super famous) and her mum is an abstract artist. So the house is full of artworks, guitars, books and cool furniture. Yesterday I jammed with Em's dad, played the banjo and we did a recording of 'amazing grace' which was good fun.
I saw a wild kangaroo last night. Apparently there are echindnas and goanas as well, but haven't seen any yet. Pretty excited.
Road tripping has been great, it's a whole bunch of girls; Ellie and Em, who I met in India, Niki and Meredith, who are friends and current/past roommates of Em and Ellie, and Marie-Cecile, a friend of Ellie's from Paris. It's such a weird group but great because we're all quite different and share the same humour. I've laughed a lot.
Last night we saw the golden guitar and went to a local pub, this evening we're going to an art exhibition opening and chilling. We have a couple more days here before we go to Ballina, then to Byron Bay.
The weather is super hot but really clear, we have a great view from the place, luckily everything has air con as it's so hot here. We miss out on the Country music festival by a few weeks, which is a shame, but it means the town is a little quieter. I also found an awesome little coffee shop that serves Allpress and knows what they're doing. Thank goodness.
